Term 3 Week 8
Principal's Message
The past fortnight has been extremely busy as the College caught up on many of the events postponed during the recent lock down. So many areas of the school have been showcased and feature in this edition of the newsletter. Please indulge me as I highlight some examples.
Our Dance program held their annual Dance Showcase last week with an impressive program of performances that demonstrated the talented dancers across the College. Many of our Dance teams have placed highly in the various Eisteddfods and Competitions throughout the year. It was their best year so far and this program continues to grow from strength to strength.
Our primary school students celebrated Book Week with an amazing array of creative costumes whilst our middle school students competed in the Write a Book in a Day Competition and our Year 10 students were enthralled by a visit from the author of the book they are studying this term in English.
Our Year 10 students completed their SETPlans this week which included the opportunity for them to present their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) pathways to their parents and PC teachers as they prepare to commence their QCE journey. Our Diploma of Business students pitched their group’s ideas for their business models and our Year 11 and 12 students have commenced their Mock Exams.
In sport our KCFA have had a busy fortnight competing in a variety of competitions with great success and our athletes have represented us well at the Pacific District Athletics carnival.
Non-State School Compliance Review
This week the College also undertook a key component of its cyclical compliance review. All independent schools undertake a review every five years as part of maintaining their accreditation to operate as a school. It has proved to be a very affirming process as our staff and Board reviewed, with the assistance of an external validator, the many achievements of the past few years.
Father’s Day
Yesterday our primary school hosted a breakfast for their fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, and father-figures in the KC community. It was well attended with the highlight being the collective dodge ball game on the Futsal Court.
P & F Father’s Day Stall
Our hardworking Parents and Friends Group followed up their successful Mother’s Day Stall with the Father’s Day version yesterday. The stall was very busy throughout the day.
My best wishes to all our College families on Sunday as we acknowledge and celebrate the important role played by fathers and father-figures in the lives of our children.

Senior School News
This term the 10 English classes have been studying the novel ‘The Running Man’, by Michael Gerard Bauer. This novel was written by a Brisbane-based author who sets this story in Ashmore. In class, students wrote hypothetical questions to the author after finishing reading the story. To add to the value of reading, the year 10 English teachers thought it would be exciting to allow the students ask the author themselves, so we organised a surprise school visit from him. Students spent Wednesday morning listening to Michael Bauer explain how he came up with his characters and setting for the book they’ve just completed, along with stories about how to write and publish a story. The author took the time to sign a small number of his latest book ‘The Things That Will Not Stand’ for some students that really engaged with his novel this term. Congratulations to Harrison Krelle, Tamika LeCourt Woodcock and Avalon Purdie for your fantastic work and engaging discussions this term!
We are looking to continue opening our school for interesting visitors in term 4, including more authors for the year 12 Literature.
Those that prepare don’t need to rely on luck, so the Mabo teachers wish good preparation to all the students sitting exams throughout exam block for this term.

Father’s Day
Happy Father’s Day to all of our special dad’s, father figures, grandpa’s, poppy’s and significant male role models. We hope that you have a fantastic day this Sunday. On that note, we would like to thank all of our dads, grandads, family members and friends who came along to celebrate our Father’s Day BBQ Breakfast on 2nd September. It was beautiful to see so many smiling faces attend. We had dads colouring in, playing charades, solving puzzles, playing Lego and dodging balls throughout the morning. We appreciate you all, and thank you for coming. We also wish to thank our P&F for running a fantastic stall for students to buy gifts for their dads.
Book Week
On Wednesday 25th August, the primary school celebrated Book Week with a special primary assembly. The theme for this year was ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’. We had many different story characters visiting us as school! It was wonderful to see so many fantastic costumes. Below are some of the 2021 winners, incase you want to curl up with your child/ren and a good book.

Kokowara News
Hello!
We have been as busy as ever this term with lots of weekly learning and celebrations happening in class.
Our theme this term has been ‘Around the World in 80 Days’, which has seen the class take a trip around the world, looking at food, culture and places. We have been so lucky in Kokowara, that our families from other countries have shared their knowledge and expertise, including recipes from Brazil, Serbia and Poland. This inspired us to write our own recipes from around the world as part of our learning to write a procedure.
We have enjoyed celebrations this term, including our wonderful Book Week dress up day, and more recently our Father's Day Breakfast. We love coming together as a community, and we can't wait for Fair, when we will get to share our learning with our families.
Finally, we have been working on an important art installation, to contribute to the Fair Art Competition. We chose to create a 'Healing Tree', and decorated it with positive affirmation to support others in building a positive mindset -something we strive for every day in Kokowara.
Love from the Kokowara family.
Congratulations
The primary school would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Zahra Ahmed for being selected as the winner in the Sport and Physical Wellbeing category of the Edstart Achievement Awards Program. The judges were extremely impressed with her nomination and, as a result, she has received a $1500 grant to support her sporting initiative. Once again, congratulation Zahra!
We also wish to congratulation our primary dance performers who presented at the Dance Showcase on Thursday 26th August. It was fantastic to see so many primary dances in this year’s program. Well done!

KC Fair
Our Kimberley College Fair is on and open to the public on Friday 10th September. We would like to invite families big and small to come and join us for an entertaining day of art, dance, science and food. We have exciting activities such as inflatables for them to bounce and rock walls for them to climb. The students are able to purchase ride armbands for $15 from Parent Portal which will give them unlimited rides or pay $5 a ride on the day. There will be a mixture of ticketed and cash/card sales on the day. Tickets will be available in the Primary play area which will be manned by our lovely Finance Ladies.
We would like to welcome Twisted Sisters, Outback Spirit Iced Tea and Authentic Turkish Food, who will be selling their delicious products on the day. Not to mention our market stalls who will have some wonderful items as well. Our Fair runs all day, starting at 9 am with a classroom walkthrough to peruse the amazing work the students have been doing in relation to the UN Sustainability Goals.
Mr Johnson will officially open the fair at 10.30 and set students off to engage in all of the activities. Our fair will conclude at the end of our school day.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Pacific District Athletics Carnival
The first day of Spring held the perfect weather for the Kimberley College Athletics team to represent our school at the Pacific District Track and Field Championships held at QSAC. We had 38 participants who competed, and we placed in 17 events. We are very proud of the industry and commitment of all our athletes and wish to congratulate them on their efforts.

From the Music Room
This term we are learning all about music from around the world!
Gubbi Gubbi are busy planning a world music themed escape room for their teachers to complete at the end of the term. The Gubbi teachers are going to have their work cut out for them with the exciting and creative music challenges the students have created. We are all very excited to see the final result and watch the escape room in action!
Waka Waka have spent the first few weeks of the term creating and sharing mixes they created through an online composition program called ‘Incredibox’. We are now extremely excited to have a class set of ukuleles and are beginning to learn chords C, F, G and Em in preparation to learn and perform a number of well known songs from around the world.
Kokowara have been introduced to traditional music from a variety of countries, they have had the opportunity to explore and respond to this music through art. Kokowara students are now learning cup percussion songs: ‘Surfing USA’ by the Beach Boys and ‘Johnny B. Goode’ by Chuck Berry. We can’t wait to perform these for family and friends later in the term.
Kokomini have also had the opportunity to listen and respond to music from around the world. They have begun learning a folk song from West Africa called ‘Obwisana’ it is also known as the stone passing song. Students in Kokomini will design and create their our own African themed clapping sticks over the next couple of weeks to use along with this song. KCFA News
Term 3 has been jam-packed this year as our Kimberley College students participated in competitions which include School Football League, Uhlsports Cup, Champion of Champions, and the Winter Futsal Titles.
SCHOOLS FOOTBALL LEAGUE
In its inaugural year, we have had great success and learning through this competition as it has now reached its end. This competition allowed our football students to compete against another school in 4 different competitions. The 4 competitions included the Senior Boys, Senior Girls (Both 40min halves), Junior Boys and Junior Girls (both 35 min halves). We competed against 6 different schools throughout the year. Students were able to experience what it was like to participate in a full match day of competition and also cheer on their fellow peers.
Our Senior Boys team finished in 3rd place, narrowly missing the grand finals. This team finished with the most goals scored which is a great achievement. The Senior Girls team finished in 6th place. The Junior Boys finished in 6th place and the Junior Girls finished in 3rd place. We look forward to preparing for next year and helping achieve the goals of our students.
UHLSPORTS CUP
Our Uhslports Cup (Senior Boys) finished the group stages on top going through undefeated. The boys scored the most goals and conceded fewer than all other teams in the group. We compete in the Quarter Finals against Clairvaux Mackillop College on Thursday, 9th September on their home turf. It has been a great campaign so far and we look forward to the challenge ahead.
CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS (FUTSAL)
We had our U/13 and U/16 boys’ teams qualify for this prestigious futsal tournament. Our U/16’s did not make it past the group stages. Our U/13 boys finished 1st in their group and made it to the quarter finals. They, unfortunately, could not get the result but finished off the day with pride.

Write a Book in a Day
Congratulations to our Write a Book in a Day authors and illustrators. I could not be more impressed with the effort, stamina, resilience and commitment these young people displayed on Friday. The task was a challenging one, more so than anyone imagined. Bringing together a selection of students that exemplify excellence in their writing and art to work on ONE story…… As you can imagine, there were a few hurdles to overcome, but they overcame them and each boat produced a book in one day.
I want to thank our Kimberley College students for their efforts, Miss Bunker for her support on the day and tech skills in uploading the stories in the nick of time, Mrs Rigden for her support in the final hours as the pressure hit and Kimberley College for supporting the students to compete in a new competition. Finally, a massive shout out to parents for lending me your talented children for the day. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the kids in action and can not say enough how amazing the kids were in their behaviour, skills and collaboration.
Many lessons were learnt and we have a few ideas for next year's competition. We hope that some of our 2021 students will be back for more next year! I plan to release their stories at the fair as part of the Art show - Write a Book in a Day. For now, here is a preview!

Dance Showcase
On Thursday 26 August, we held our annual Dance Showcase to highlight all the hard work and dedication our students have had to the dance program throughout 2021. We could not be prouder of all students who participated and are thankful to have experienced such a wonderful evening with each of them.
This year, COVID has brought a lot of halts to our schedule but never to the passion and joy our dancers’ experience. Thank you to all those who attended, and to all those who have supported both the students and the program in 2021.
