Term 3 Week 4
Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
I want to start by thanking our whole community for the manner in which we collectively have handled the most recent lockdown and the move back to remote learning. The news last Saturday that the lockdown was to take effect from 4pm on that day no doubt took most of us by surprise and we all had to act quickly. I particularly want to thank our teachers for their tireless efforts to make this transition run as smoothly as possible. As I write this article we are yet to find out if the lockdown will end on Sunday but I am confident our community is well set up to respond whatever the decision. We are regularly posting updates on our new College App and I again encourage all families to download and install the Schoolzine App to ensure you have access to the latest information.
Primary Playground and Outdoor Learning Area
I am very pleased to share the news that approval has been given for two new projects in our primary school. The first is a playground area targeted at our middle and upper primary students. Construction of this playground will occur towards the end of this year and be completed over the Christmas holidays ready to open in 2022. This playground will be constructed so that it extends the existing primary playground area between the futsal court and the covered basketball court. I have included with this article some artist impressions of the final playground area.
Secondly, we have also received approval for the construction of an outdoor learning area in the space outside the Gubbi classrooms. This also will be constructed later this year. We are hopeful this space will be open before the end of the school year. Once complete this will provide a great outdoor learning area for our primary students. Again, artist impressions of the finished area have been included with this article.
We are all very excited to be able to proceed with these new projects for our Primary School.
Enrolments Update
It is very pleasing to see the level of demand for a Kimberley College education remains strong. Many year levels including Year 7 are now full for 2022 and we are maintaining waitlists now in these year levels. We have also commenced interviews for enrolment for 2023 and are taking applications for 2024 and beyond. As we have done for the past couple of years, we are opening a third class for Gubbi, our Year 5/6 Boat. This means we presently have vacancies for Year 5 for 2022. If you know of a family that would like to enroll their child for KC for 2022 in Year 5 please share this information with them and get them to contact our enrolments coordinator by email enrolments@kimberley.college or submit an application online using our website.

Deputy Principal's Message
Being for others
With the prospect of a continuing lockdown weighing heavy on the minds and hearts of our College community, it is a difficult time for all. The KC spirit embodied by our staff this week has been a reminder of why our school is such a special place; with staff members working tirelessly to get resources ready for remote learning as well as entertaining students and parents in the car park as they collect laptops or curriculum packs. Truly, a sight to behold!
The energy, commitment and genuine desire to be a ‘being for others’ is an integral part of KC life. Our highest achievement ‘Waffo’ speaks volumes about the kind of community we are. This term, our Senior School students participated in leadership workshops run by Y-Lead; these were underpinned by the idea of acknowledging the strengths of their peers, embodying the Waffo spirit and being of service to others. Next term, we are introducing a peer mentoring program; this will involve student volunteers from Years 10 & 11 working closely with our Year 7 students to foster strong connections and support them in their Middle School journey.
When we consider what ‘being for others’ looks like, being equipped with the tools to support the mental health of others is paramount. Alongside workshops set up for our students, we are delighted that Peta Burns, a senior psychologist with Metro South Child and Youth Mental Health Service, will run a parent/carer presentation on the teenage brain and mental health. In order to secure your seat (physically or virtually) for this presentation on Tuesday 17 August 2021 at 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, please click on this link: https://www.trybooking.com/BTHAJ . We look forward to welcoming you.
Stay safe and look after each other.

Chemistry Excursion
Earlier this term, our Year 11 and Year 12 Chemistry students went on an excursion to Griffith University for an experience in a university laboratory. The Yr12 students carried out six different analyses using various chemical methods, from wet chemistry to instrumental analysis using an FTIR and HPLC. Yr11 students made aspirin, calculated the yield of their product and analysed their pure and impure sample. All the students were fully engaged in their experiments and followed the directions of the tutors in the laboratory. It was an excellent day out which I hope will be an ongoing fixture in the excursion calendar for senior Chemistry students.
The year 11 Chemistry class recently visited Griffith University laboratory. The year 11’s has been studying chromatography which is the analytical process that separates compounds in a mixture. While attending, we performed a series of experiments which included making acetylsalicylic acid also known as aspirin. We were shown how to use FTIR and HPLC instruments to analyse our sample to determine the purity of our sample of aspirin. The staff at Griffith University were very supportive and engaging with teaching us new lab skills and reading data samples. Everyone really enjoyed the learning experience and getting to use lab equipment we typically don’t have at school.

Going to Griffith University was an amazing experience, and not just because we got to miss out on a day of school. It was great getting to use all of the equipment, from the spectrometer to the HPLC system. Needless to say, it set my standards pretty high for what the lab at KC should have in the future. The people there were friendly and created a great environment that any student would be lucky to study in. Overall it was an excellent day, and one that I would definitely recommend for future students.

Waka Waka News
This term in Waka Waka we have been looking at Australia’s Neighbours. We have explored Papua New Guinea and New Zealand and learnt about the culture, art, music, native animals, landmarks, flags and so much more. We have also explored the Sustainable Development Goals that these countries are working on and brainstormed many ideas of how Australia could help out its neighbours to achieve these goals.
During Maths, the first few weeks we have been spent exploring money. We planned a picnic for our family with a budget of $50, went shopping with shop catalogues, played shops in the classroom with pretend registers, and played many games to calculate prices and change to be given.
As part of our Maths lessons we have also been looking at bartering and how people traded for goods before there was a currency. We held a ‘Barter Day’ in the classroom where the students made something at home and brought it in to trade. This brought much excitement as the students thought about the worth of their item and looked around the room at what they would like to swap it for. In some cases, there were several trades before they were satisfied with their trade.

QUEENSLAND SCHOOLS FOOTBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
A massive congratulations to our 3 school representatives Daniel De Ruysscher, Sahara Jonata, and Zahra Ahmed as they competed against the best U/12 footballers in Queensland. It was huge 5 days, full of football ️, fun and cold temperatures.
Daniel’s South Coast team won the tournament and he was also selected in the Queensland Schools State Team, this is an extraordinary achievement, which we are very proud of him here at Kimberley College.
Sahara and Zahra’s South Coast team started off really well winning their first 4 games. Our 2 girls were amongst the youngest in the competition at 11 years old this year, competing in an U/12 competition. Zahra was awarded player of the match in one of her matches. We are super proud of these two girls. They did not only take the challenge on, they smashed it!
We’d like to acknowledge the fantastic support these families have shown for their child. They wouldn’t be where they are without you.
We look forward to nurturing their development and unleashing more of their potential

Teachers vs Yr 12's Games
Last week we saw the commencement of our annual Teacher vs. Grade 12 sports matches for 2021 with a game of Netball. The matches are a highlight for all players and spectators and showcase both the competitive spirit and connectedness we have here at Kimberley College.
Our teacher team was made up of Matthew Tregenza, Scott Shepherd, Emily Smallhorn, Jordan Smith, Lucas Venter, Katie Mattingley, James Fehlberg and Michael Rohweder. With our student team made up of Carter Ewer, Harry Wadas, Tomas Pritchard, Nick Gilchrist, Casey Morris, Nate Boylan, Evy Boots, Renee Giarratano, Emily Clifford, Tiana Stalley, Kasey Anderson, Tayah Battaglene-Sharpe, Angelique Boyland and Madison Newcombe. A special thanks to our referees Amy Dowling and Aly Stromborg.
Whilst the grade 12's showed a height and reach advantage over some of our teachers, our teachers showed endurance and kept the game close as it was 10-10 until the very last minute. The 12's came through with the last goal finishing the first Teachers vs. Grade 12's match with a score of 11-10.
We look forward to being back on the court very soon to even the score!

Art News
Art competitions offer the students a chance to expose their creations to the general public. It allows them to challenge themselves and move out of their comfort zones. Students learn to think of art competitions as more than just about winning and losing; they learn to appreciate the experience and move on to become better and stronger artists. Constant learning and self-motivation are the key to success as an artist and art competitions help to instil these habits in students.
IEU (Independent Education Union) recently invited entries from school students in non-government schools throughout Queensland and the Northern Territory. The theme of the art competition was 'Our World'. We are very proud to inform you that 8 of our Senior Art students participated in the competition by creating meaningful and beautiful artworks. We are waiting with anticipation for the results. Ms Roya would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge their courage and appreciate the time they took to create these artworks.
Yasmin Cullen: Year 12 Visual Art
Ariel Moss: Year 12 Visual Art and Visual Art in Practice
Ellie McKenzie: Year 11 Visual Art
