Principal's Message
In this our final newsletter for 2021, I would like to acknowledge the contribution of staff, parents, carers and students to Kimberley College this year. A key element of our philosophy at Kimberley College is for our graduates to be lifelong learners and global citizens who create opportunities and are confident in pursuing their passions. There have been many highlights throughout this year and this was very apparent at each of our graduation events held over the past few weeks. The year 12’s were farewelled with an eventful last few days including the Graduation Ceremony, Formal and the traditional Water Fight. At our Primary Graduation we recognised our first foundation students who graduate this year to commence their secondary schooling. These students were presented with a special badge to celebrate the occasion. One day in the not too distant future we will have graduates of Kimberley College who have completed their entire 13 years of schooling at KC. Whilst at the Middle School Graduation event held last week, we celebrated the year where students in the Middle School have had the opportunity to build their skills, learn new skills, represent their boats and Kimberley College in external competitions and engage in school life to its fullest.
We approach next year with a real sense of optimism. A new classroom block will be installed over the holidays along with an extension to the primary play area and an outdoor learning area in the primary precinct. Many of our water bubblers will be upgraded and the first round of lockers will be installed for use by senior students. We also announced recently that the College will increase its involvement in inter-school sport in 2022 with the first gala day occurring in term one along with the P and F’s major fundraiser event – a colour fun run.
Thank you for being part of the Kimberley College community this year. Thank you for your support. I look forward to welcoming you back in 2022. I hope you have a wonderful festive season and a very Merry Christmas.

Deputy Principal's Message
Keeping yourself and your mates safe
In Week 6 Paul Dillon graced Kimberley College with his exuberant presence – albeit in virtual form – for our final Invictus Wellbeing presentations of the year. Over a two-day period, Paul presented to all teaching staff, to parents/caregivers on a webinar, as well as to all Year 10 & 11 students. Having worked in the area of drug education for more than 30 years, Paul is undoubtedly best placed to provide guidance to our College community. His focus is on providing up-to-date information and advice on staying safe rather than employing scare tactics. The feedback from his presentations has been overwhelmingly positive and we hope to secure him for future presentations in 2022.
Here is a link to Paul’s latest blog:

Being for others
Over 20 students (from Years 10 and 11) volunteered to become Peer Mentors at the College. This is testament to our students’ altruistic attitude and desire to support others. In Week 8, the student volunteers spent two days being trained as Peer Mentors in preparation for their role next year. Students immersed themselves in the training and they are now equipped to facilitate a transition program to our Year 7 cohort in Term 1, 2022. They will also look for opportunities to work and connect with the Year 7s throughout the 2022 year to help build greater connection across sub schools. This is indicative of our students’ Waffo spirit.

Thinking critically, creatively and collaboratively
Engaging in philosophical Communities of Inquiry provide optimal ground for students to develop the ability to think critically, creatively and collaboratively; skills that are highly prized in our College community and beyond.
Tuesday 30 November marked the inaugural Queensland Junior Philosothon at Hillbrook School. A Philosothon is a competition where students explore philosophical ideas collaboratively in a series of Communities of Inquiry and are judged by the quality of their participation. The aim is not to ‘score points’, but to enable the group to move towards awareness of underlying concepts and critical understanding of different positions and arguments that arise during the discussion. Students are encouraged to ask questions, probe deeper and try to understand and clarify both their own arguments and those expressed by others within the group.
Eight Gubbi students attended the Philosothon event. They participated in three Communities of Inquiry (on happiness, knowledge and moral goodness respectively) as well as a team round unravelling logic puzzles. We are very proud of how the students conducted themselves; how they worked collaboratively; and, how they celebrated the success of one team member who received third place overall (Oliver Scott).
Well done Oliver, Naomi, Loren, Max, Willow, Lilia, Georgia, Nalini.
In 2022, collaborative philosophical inquiry will be taught across Prep – Year 9 at Kimberley College for one lesson per week. This aligns with our educational philosophy and aim to develop critical and creative thinkers who are equipped for life at school and beyond.

The key messages from these three recent events are rather pertinent in our current climate; look after yourself and those around you; explore ways to be for others; and, interrogate ideas rather than simply accepting them.
I sincerely hope that you have a calm, balanced and restful holiday break.
I look forward to seeing you in 2022!

Congratulations goes to Namatjira student Marjone Maartens for winning the Industrial Artists of the Year award, First in Subject award and Academic Achievement award. Marjone displayed industry and commitment throughout her senior years and was a worthy recipient of these awards.

Year 10 SEL Serve Event
During SEL throughout Term 4, Year 10 students have been focusing on their Serve unit as they explored the benefits of looking beyond themselves and serving others. It was decided amongst the students that to demonstrate this serving nature, the Year 10s would ‘serve’ advice to the current Year 9 students to help prepare them for their transition into Senior School next year. During lessons, Year 10 students were asked, “Having experienced the transition to Senior School, what advice would you give your Year 9 self?” Students then brainstormed a range of insightful tips covering topics such as their personal wellbeing, social interactions/ experiences and study tips. The Year 10s then worked these ideas into a ‘How to Year 10’ booklet and combined with some special gift ideas, presented these items to the Year 9s.
The Year 10 students put significant time and effort into this Serve unit and we hope it will be of benefit to the Year 9 students as they make the next exciting step in their learning journey!

Middle School News
What an amazing year the students have had to stretch their minds and hearts. They’ve welcomed new students and teachers, explored their personal limits and pushed beyond them throughout our themes of Futures, Journeys, War & Peace and Power.
2020 limited us from giving students an opportunity to participate in competitions where they could showcase their talents. But, 2021 meant that we were open to engaging with the community again. Debating saw our teams articulate with precision the pros and cons of numerous topics, Write a Book in a Day, challenged not only our literary students but our artistic ones as well, as they had to write an entire short story. Tournament of Minds gave our drama students a chance to write and perform their own play, STEM workshops and Indigenous art workshops also gave students a chance to grow and build new skills. Raw and Camp gave our body smart students an avenue to show their athleticism. Everyone had an opportunity to engage in something they loved.
Graduation was again open to our KC families and what a wonderful night it was. Hosted by the students for the students, a true testament to what our students can achieve when given the opportunity.
As we farewell 2021, we also say goodbye to our year 9s. They have been a big part of our Middle School family and their commitment and leadership will be missed. We look forward to inviting the year 8s to take the mantle and what the new year 7s will bring to the mix.
Thank you to everyone who has walked with us this year, we hope that you have a safe and enjoyable break.

Primary School News

This year, we have been fortunate enough to have had you at significant events throughout the year. These events are not the same without your familiar and friendly faces. We wish you all a well-deserved break and time together as a family to recharge and reconnect. We look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces back in 2022.

Swimming Carnival
On Thursday, 25th November, the primary students travelled to the Logan West Aquatics Centre to participate in our primary swimming carnival. The event was a celebration of our term four swimming lessons and a chance for the students to try their best. We want to take the opportunity to congratulate all our little swimmers on their participation, encouragement of others, and winning attitudes. There were lots of smiles and giggles, and we had so much fun participating in races, watching others compete, and doing some free swims.

Christmas Concert
On Thursday, 2nd December, the students concluded the year with their annual Christmas Carols Concert. At the concert, they had the opportunity to perform their Christmas song, participate in Christmas dances, and watch Christmas performances from across the primary and middle school. A great day was had by all.
Gubbi Gubbi Goes to Movie World!
Term Four has been the best yet for our Gubbi Gubbi students! Our calendar was jammed packed with events, but we counted down the days until our all exciting trip to Movie World! We have been very lucky in Gubbi Gubbi this term to have explored all elements of The Arts. With our teachers, we have learnt skills in Dance, Drama, Film, TV, and Media Arts. These learning experiences helped prepare us for our ‘Lights! Camera! Action!’ workshop, with some of the cast and crew from Movie World.
On arrival at Movie World, we were greeted by John, who plays ‘The Joker,’ and KP, the leading lady in the ‘Hollywood Stunt Driver 2’ show. The children were given the inside scoop into what it takes to be a live-action performer. We also got a preview of the show and got to ask questions before seeing it come to life later in the day. The stunt driver show had us on the edge of our seats with extreme precision driving, comedy, and action, all rolled into one action-packed performance. It even featured Mr. Heffernan, who was chosen from the crowd, with our help, to star as one of the leading roles in the show! Some of us even made the big screen when, as they say in showbiz, ‘Lights! Camera! Action!’
Our Gubbi Gubbis then headed to experience the thrills Movie World had to offer! We screamed our lungs out on all the scary rides, and some even got their licenses in the very prestigious Driving School. The day saw many students lining up again and again for the scarier rides. Some parents even braved the heights and speeds to join in on the fun (though this may have resulted in some parents losing their lunch). Miss C, Mr. H, and Miss Downer were all coerced onto rides, and all got to see some very interesting sides of our Gubbis. A massive shout-out to those who braved their fears and tried something new!
We caught up with all our favourite movie characters, posed for pictures, and got to see how they used their improvisation skills up close and personal. It was a fabulous day out for all, with all the children loving the experiences they had, including Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. A huge thank you to all of our parent volunteers for helping us have so much fun! It was the perfect way to end our year together in Gubbi Gubbi.

Here is an overview of our year together representing Kimberley College for Football & Futsal.
We entered into the inaugural Schools Football League comprising of 7 schools and played in all 4 competitions.
We competed in the ISSA Cup for U14 boys’ and girls’ squads. We also competed in the Uhlsports cup for our Senior boys, who topped their group going undefeated and qualified for the quarter-finals but ending their campaign there.
The District Rivers Championship day for our Year 7-9 boys was the first time we entered this competition. We finished second and lost the Grand Finals with more than half of the team 2 years younger than the teams we played on the day.
We competed in the Pacific Pines 9v9 tournament with our Year 5&6 boys making the semi-finals, our Year 9 & 10 boys making the Grand Finals and our Year 7&8 girls making the Grand Finals.
The Bill Turner Cup U15 Boys got knocked out after playing in extra time golden goal after making it past the first 2 rounds and the Bill Turner Trophy for the U15 girls, unfortunately, ended in the early stages of the competition.
We had many Futsal events including the South East Queensland Futsal Tournament where our U13 and U16 boys qualified for the Queensland Champion of Champions and our U13’s advanced all the way to the Australasian Champion of Champions which start tomorrow for a 3-day event.
We also competed in the Winter State Futsal Titles with our U19 boys and U13 girls ending up champions on the day along with entering in the Summer State futsal titles in which our U19 boys were runners up for the day.
Earlier this week we were invited to the South Brisbane Primary Futsal Cup where our U12 girls went undefeated all day, winning their group but lost on penalties in the Grand Finals. Our U12 boys were able to come away undefeated and win against a tough team in the Grand Final.
Due to restrictions to school-based competitions over the last 2 years, this has been a huge year for our students and staff involved.
We had students who made regional representative teams within the school system. Congratulations to Connor Damsma (U19 South Coast Regional team and Champion) Daniel DeRuysscher (U12 South Coast Regional team and Champion) Zahra Ahmed and Sahara Jonata (U12 South Coast Regional team, 3rd overall). A special mention to Daniel De Ruysscher on being selected for the Queensland School Boys U12 Merit Football team.
This is an enormous achievement as Football in Queensland maintains its position as the leading organised sport, by far, for adults and children, with some 333,400 participants recorded in the latest survey (Football Queensland, AusPlay Survey). This provides many pathways for students to be a part of a sport they love playing, even when they finish school.
Well done to all students involved on a successful and jam-packed year! We look forward to 2022 and coming back stronger.
Scott Shepherd

Equestrian Round-up
2021 was a very exciting year for our Equestrian enthusiast students, with the establishment of our Kimberley College Equestrian Team our riders are very happy to be provided with support and recognition for the sport they love from KC.
It was a bit of a slow start to the year with lots of organising to do and a lot to learn about Interschool Qld. We started the year with team practice afternoons and lessons held at Redlands Horse and Pony Club. As most of our riders enjoy jumping, we did lots of training in the disciplines of show jumping and cross country and made plans for competing as a team at Interschool Qld competitions.
As Lucy and Rosie Prevost were more experienced at competing at Pony Club events, they were first to kick off representing KC at interschool competitions with their first competition held by Fairholme College at Pittsworth Showgrounds. This was a successful first competition for the girls, with Lucy placing 2nd overall in the 80cm state qualifier class on a count back for 1st place and Rosie who only competed in the 50cm training round on her substitute pony due to her own horse being injured placed 5th overall. The next interschool competition was held by Scots PGC College at Warwick in May and was very successful with Lucy taking out 1st place overall in the 80cm state qualifier and Rosie taking out 1st place overall in the 50cm training round. From these two competitions, Lucy fortunately gained all her qualifying rounds for States, which then took us up to Maryborough for the 2021 Hygain Interschool State Championships. Lucy unfortunately had some unlucky rails in this event; however she did manage to finish in 12th place overall out of 53 riders.
With the much-anticipated arrival of our Kimberley College Equestrian team uniforms and saddlecloths, we saw 6 of our KC equestrian team competing at the Emmaus College Interschool Competition at Jimboomba in August. It was fantastic to see the girls supporting each other and really being so happy to be able to compete for KC. The results for this competition were as follows: Lucy Prevost 2nd place overall & Grace Ferguson 7th place in the 90cm qualifier class; and Penelope Benseman 1st place overall, Rosie Prevost 4th place & Alyssa Jurlina 8th in the 70cm qualifying class
Our equestrian team riders have also had a lot of success in pony club events with notable achievements including: Lucy Prevost finishing 8th overall at the State PCQ Show Jumping Championships in Sarina and 3rd place overall in the Inaugural State PCQ Tetrathlon Championships at Southport.
Even though the interschool competitions have been a bit further afield than pony club competitions, the girls have really felt proud representing KC and being part of the KC equestrian team. They look forward to kicking off the 2022 Interschool Qld competitions nice and early and supporting each other in their equestrian disciplines.
We would like to thank Sandra Alexzander for playing a huge part in the success of our first year.
