Term 4 Week 6
Principal's Message
Pathways through the Senior School
At Kimberley College we believe that students need more than core subject knowledge to be successful. They need to become lifelong learners and global citizens who create opportunities and are confident in pursuing their passions. Our ambition is to nurture and encourage every student's individual talents and provide all students with the knowledge, critical and creative thinking skills, attributes and values they will require to be successful lifelong learners. We also believe that students need to be provided with pathways through Senior School that set them up for success post school.
This term our Year Nine students are undertaking a careers program that includes the opportunity to taste a range of the elective options we offer in Senior School. This journey then continues in Year 10 as students learn about and prepare their Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan. The SET plan helps students structure their senior learning around their abilities, interests and ambitions thus mapping a pathway towards achieving their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Throughout Year 10, our students are then provided with opportunities to explore their options through a Career Education program which culminates in a special presentation of learning which parents are invited to during term three. This is timed in conjunction with them choosing their pathway and subjects of study for their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). Our current Year 10 students this term have now commenced their unit one subjects within their QCE.
Kimberley College offers a wide range of General Subjects in Years 11 and 12 within the QCE that students can use as part of their ATAR ranking used by universities for entry to popular courses. Year 12 students studying General Subjects will complete their external examinations this week. They will then eagerly await their subject results and ATAR which traditionally become available just before Christmas. We also offer pathways to trade and the workforce and we are equally proud of the achievement of our students on these pathways. I will now outline some of the achievements of our current year 12’s on this pathway. The Year 12 Diploma of Business class this year was the largest in the history of the College and 100% of students enrolled successfully attained the qualification. 48 Year 12 students out of a cohort of 89 completed a certificate or diploma course either through TAFE or another recognised training provider. Finally, 16 Year 12 students completed a School Based Traineeship or Apprenticeship.

Remembrance Day Assembly
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.
"Lest we forget"
On Thursday, the 11th of November, our students attended a moving ceremony to commemorate Remembrance Day. Students from our school council Erin French and Haruki Ryles confidently led the proceedings, including the Primary Choir singly a lovely rendition of "We Will Rise" by Jordan Anthony. Representatives from the Senior, Middle and Primary schools lay handmade wreaths at our table of remembrance. Our Principal, Mr Johnson, supported by two of our Prep students Sasha Smith and Samuel Lawler, lit our candle of remembrance, and Mr Wright read 'In Flanders Fields' by John McCrae, 1914. Bringing powerful meaning to the occasion was our Catafalque Party led by Corporal Matthew Stenning, including Acting Sergeant Zane Field, Leading Cadets Johan Nott, Flynn Wickens, and Cadet Harry Krelle, who demonstrated precision and skill to those of us gathered for the occasion.

Senior School News
It was a very busy term in Unaipon as we spent our last weeks with the graduating year 12s in the classroom and supported our year 10s and 11s in their transition to their Unit 1 and 3 courses of study. We also welcomed to the faculty Mr. Johnson as our teacher of Unit 3 & 4 chemistry and Ms. Maxwell as our teacher of year 10 maths and General Mathematics. We also said farewell to Mr. Fehlberg who has joined the middle school in Lama Lama.
This year, we continued the development of the year 10 science and mathematics programs. The year 10 science teachers have, once again, run a successful bridge-building competition, with the finals having taken place in the first few weeks of this term. The bridges that qualified for this event had to withstand a mass of 5 kg in the preliminary round. Year 11 biology students recently attended an excursion to the University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus. During this excursion, students took part in a workshop on how to use statistics in biology and gained hands-on experience with the various surveying techniques used in ecology. The skills gained on the day deepened students' understanding of the subject matter and provided additional preparation to set them up for success with internal assessments.
Finally, we would like to recognise the increasing number of students who are asking for assistance outside of class time, including attending the Unaipon faculty tutorials on Tuesday afternoons. It is great to see students taking responsibility for their learning. Well done!
Brad Hood - Head of Faculty

Middle School News
Day in the Life of a Year 9 Middle School Student
Year 9 has been a year of new experiences and preparation for our senior years. During the term, we participated in the ‘Great Heights’ unit which provided us with future career considerations and the necessities to achieve future goals. We learnt about job preparation, as well as how to write a successful resume and cover letter. The unit incorporated a literacy and numeracy certificate completed on Mighty Minds. Towards the end of the term, the year 9’s were given the opportunity to participate in taster subjects to gain a better understanding of senior school. As a celebration, we were all invited to a ‘Year 9 Dinner’ to formally conclude three years in middle school. Many of us are excited for the freedom senior will bring and the new opportunities we will have.

Waka Waka News
This term has been an exciting time in Waka Waka! We began the term with our camp to Kindalin. At camp, we participated in so many fun activities such as; canoeing, low ropes, aeroball and even a zipline across a lake! It was a big experience for us to spend a night away from our families and sleep in the cabins. At camp we also got to play some fun games, like an ‘Around the World’ scavenger hunt and ‘Gaga Ball’. A highlight was definitely the disco we had in the nighttime and the chocolate cake for dessert!
This term, we have been learning all about living things in our theme, ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. This theme has given us the chance to investigate the classification of animals, the dinosaurs and different lifecycles. We have also been doing an animal-inspired piece of art each week. So far for this theme we have had two wonderful experiences; an excursion to the Queensland Museum and a visit from Bugs Ed! At the museum, we learnt all about the classification of animals by becoming scientists. Bugs Ed taught us all about the amazing adaptations that bugs have made to survive. We even got to hold a stick insect!
The Waka Waka students also had a good time at the school farm. Not only did they learn about the school's Australian Miniature goats, they got to pat them as well. As they were leaving the goats, one of the students commented to Mrs White, 'That was the best ever. It was the third time I've ever touched a goat in my life'.

From the Pirate Crew!
Argghhh! The Kokominis are enjoying helping Captain Blackbottom to find his long lost treasure. Captain Blackbottom surprised them last week with a special visit to the classroom. They found him asleep in the cupboard and helped him out and showed him all around the classroom, he especially liked their homemade pirate ship! The Kokominis have loved listening to all of Captain Blackbottoms stories, their favourite one to date is how he got his name!

SLIP, SLOP, SLAP
Even though the sun is hot, it does cool things. It keeps us warm and makes flowers and plants grow. The sun even gives us vitamin D so we can better absorb calcium into our bodies for strong bones. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with two in three Australians developing some form of skin cancer before age 70 (Royal Childrens Hospital, 2019). This makes sun protection very important for all Australians.
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can cause sunburn, skin damage, eye damage and skin cancer. UV damage accumulated during childhood and adolescence is strongly associated with an increased risk of skin cancer later in life. With our weather heating up it is the perfect time to ensure our Kimberly College community is being proactive in regards to sun safety.
Everyday Essentials:
- A Kimberley College hat
- A refillable water bottle
- Daily sunscreen application
“Slip, Slop, Slap! It sounds like a breeze when you say it like that. Slip, Slop, Slap! In the sun we always say "Slip Slop Slap!" Slip, Slop, Slap! Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat, Slip, Slop, Slap! You can stop skin cancer – say: "Slip, Slop, Slap!"
